1st grading period: SOL 6.1 scientific investigation, SOL 6.4 atoms, elements, & compounds
2nd grading period: SOLs 6.2, 6.5, 6.9 energy, SOL 6.5 properties of water, SOL 6.6 properties of earth’s atmosphere
3rd grading period: SOL 6.3 solar energy, SOL 6.3 & 6.6 dynamics of earth’s atmosphere, SOL 6.8 earth/space systems
4th grading period: SOLs 6.7 & 6.5 watersheds, SOL 6.9 resource conservation
GRADING POLICY:
Homework 10%
Classwork (this includes class participation) 25%
Quizzes 30%
Tests/Projects (this includes notebook checks)
35%
All graded papers will be returned to the students and will become a part of the interactive science notebook. Parents can monitor their child’s progress by reviewing the science notebook regularly.
GRADING SCALE:
The Hampton City School grading scale will be in effect. This grading scale is:
A = 93-100
B = 85-92
C = 75-84
D = 68-74
F = 0-67
HOMEWORK:
Homework assignments are always written on the board and explained in class. It is the responsibility of the student to have his/her agenda at all times and to carefully copy down all assignments. Homework will also be posted on Ms. McAllister’s Weebly site (go to SGC website-> select staff -> select Ms. McAllister -> this takes you to Ms. McAllister’s portaportal -> select Ms. McAllister’s Weebly site-> select homework). As much as is possible, homework for the week will be posted on Mondays.
Homework will be reviewed in class and will receive a grade. If homework is not turned in at the beginning of the class period for which it was assigned, a note will be placed in the agenda (to be signed by the parent). Students will not be allowed to call home or return to the locker to get an assignment. Students who submit the completed assignment by the next class period will receive a score of 50%.
The second time a student fails to submit homework on time, contact will be made with the parent/guardian. The assignment may be submitted by the next class with a 50% penalty.
The third time a student does not submit homework, a parent-teacher conference will be conducted by phone. The assignment may be submitted by the next class with a 50% penalty.
TESTS/QUIZZES:
Quizzes will be administered several times during a unit of study. Advanced notice will be given for quizzes/tests.
NOTEBOOKS:
Students are to keep all science papers in the interactive science notebook. The table of contents will be reviewed regularly to assist students with organizing papers.
As soon as papers are given/returned to students, they should be glued in the science notebook according to the table of contents. Science papers are not to be thrown away!
The notebook will be graded at least once each nine weeks. The notebook check will count as a test grade.
MAKE-UP WORK:
When a student returns, he/she should check the class agenda (or get with a fellow classmate) and copy the assignments missed.
HCS policy allows students a time period equal to the number of days absent to make up missed work. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that missed work is completed in the time allotted by Hampton City Schools.
SCIENCE FAIR:
All 6th grade students are required to complete a science fair project. The science fair is a long-term assignment that is completed outside of class. The project is broken into manageable assignments that are due during the 1st and 2nd nine weeks. Students may work alone or in pairs. Students are not permitted to work in groups greater than two. A detailed science fair packet will be given to each student in September.
DISCIPLINE:
Students and staff will abide by the Spratley Gifted Center Effective School-wide Discipline Plan that is posted in the classroom and throughout the school. The following guidelines effectively summarize this discipline plan:
Rules:
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Respect self, others, and school property.
3. Practice self-control.
4. Show responsible work habits.
Consequences for not following rules (in no particular order):
1. Verbal warning / conference with the student
2. Parent contacted (note placed in the agenda for
parent signature)
3. Detention assigned
4. Referral to the Assistant Principal
Rewards for demonstrating responsible behavior:
1. Positive contact made with the parent
2. Fun Friday
COMMUNICATION:
The preferred means of communication will be through e-mail, although messages will also be conveyed via the agenda and telephone. It is imperative that parents check and sign the agenda on a daily basis.

As much as possible, class notes and handouts will be available on Ms. McAllister’s Weebly site. (http://guest.portaportal.com/betsymcallister)
